As the Director of Disability Benefits in our Short Term Disability (STD) group, you ll provide the direction for significant portion of our group STD claims operations leading 5 teams across locations in Hillsboro, Oregon and White Plains, New York. People leadership and development will be a big focus of yours to ensure we are building and enhancing current and future leaders.

You ll be spending your efforts relationship building, creating connections, driving change and operational excellence.
You ll anticipate, assess and address individual and systemic challenges.
To do this, you must have the passion and drive to stay on the cutting edge of customer experience, continuous improvement, and STD practices.



Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Short Term Disability and Absence Management, you ll provide operational, financial, and people leadership of a team of approximately 65.
You ll have approximately 5 direct reports who are people leaders and 1 individual contributor. You ll build strong credibility and effective and trusting relationships with your team and other stakeholders to ensure business needs are met through operational and technological advancements. You ll study trends and provide insightful data to share your insights with your peers to help drive appropriate strategic decisions. You proactively identify barriers to success and work with other leadership members to define and implement innovative solutions.
You ll identify areas of potential blind spots and put plans in place to remediate You ll keep abreast of market, legal and regulatory environments to ensure our disability programs, policies, and services maintain a competitive position in the marketplace. You ll collaborate with other groups to support the sales effort which may involve the hosting of sales team members and prospective customers for site visits and sales meetings. Diverse and effective talent, leadership and technical capability across the business is critical, so you will partner with the leadership team and our HR partners to support the growth of this trend including leadership development, succession planning and performance coaching/management. You ll be instrumental in working with your colleagues to develop and implement disability management strategies and programs to result in cost-effective and appropriate intervention, rehabilitation and return to work outcomes, appropriate cost containment and account management for policyholders and claimants, identification of potentially fraudulent claims. You ll participate in formulating disability management guidelines and policies, goals and objectives. You ll ensure your team meets business goals in claim decision accuracy, thorough investigations, reserve, payment and tax accuracy, appropriate pursuit and coordination of deductible income and overpayments, timely and appropriate application of policy provisions, timely communication, and reporting of claim data for insured and self-funded accounts.
You ll ensure coordinated department activities with policyholders, the SIU, and other departments to meet claim and account management goals. You ll ensure you have a fully trained staff capable of providing effective claim and account management and service, in a changing business and legal environment while also ensuring adequate staffing. Work and negotiate effectively with Group Sales, Underwriting, Legal, QA, the SIU, other departments and state regulators to contribute to the sale and retention of business, product development and the company s competitive position and reputation in the disability marketplace.

Your areas of focus will be:

Employee Engagement You ll drive leadership practices to align with our drive towards a stronger performance culture and plan for our future talent needs by helping shape and execute on new initiatives in workplace Process Improvement/Change Management You ll partner with the Lean Center of Excellence and IT and other groups to ensure success practices are a continued focus ensuring both our process and technology meets the current and future needs of our customers. Talent Management You ll partner with HR and Talent Management teams to build a framework for ensuring future pipelines of talent and strong




You ll have at least 3 years of experience in claims administration experience. You ll have a minimum of 5 years of experience leading people leaders and/or a team of individual contributors. A Bachelor s degree in business, science or medical related field or combination of experience is desired.

Desired Qualifications:

An understanding of or having had direct exposure to a quality or process improvement or change management methodology e.g.
Lean, Six Sigma, PROSC.
PMI or substantive project management experience preferred.
Ideally you ve had some exposure to a large scale transformational organizational change Experience in managed disability and claims management principles and practices including: contract interpretation, ERISA, state and case laws pertaining to disability claim administration.

You have the willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time to visit other office locations and attend industry conferences as A BA/BS from a reputable, accredited institution or equivalent combination of related experience is required.
